The Medal Cross Country Mountain Bike contest was held in Vanadzor
On June 30, Pedal to the Medal Cross Country Mountain Bike contest was held in Vanadzor.

This was one-of-a-kind event organized with initiative of EcoLab Foundation for Sustainable Development and Active Citizenship and Boo Mountain Bike Park Tourism Development NGO, in cooperation with the EU Delegation in Armenia, EU4Sport event. The participants competed in 5km trail, which was also completed by the EU Ambassador to Armenia Piotr Świtalski.

The event was attended by the Governor of Lori region Andrey Ghukasyan, Vice-Mayor of Vanadzor Arman Bernetsyan,The Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Gevorg Loretsyan, representatives of the local government bodies and guests from international organisations.

In his welcome speech Ambassador Switalski noted,” Vanadzor is a paradise for European mountain bikers and the city with its beautiful nature has a big potential for becoming a center for mountain biking.”

EcoLab Foundation’s Yana Mkrtchyan mentioned that the Foundation will continue cooperation with Boo Mountain Bike Park NGO, in order to support the development of mountain biking sport and sustainable tourism in Vanadzor.

Governor Ghukasyan stated that tourism is a priority area for the development of Lori region, and tourism tied with sport make the region even more interesting. “There is much need for these kinds of initiatives; we are developing projects, which will surely help us substantially improve spaces in the region within 1-2 years’ time,'' said Ghukasyan.

Deputy mayor of Vanadzor Arman Bernetsyan read the welcome speech of Mayor Mamikon Aslanyan which highlighted the importance of “Health body, healthy spirit”  and wished good luck to all the participants.

Deputy Minister of Education, science, culture and sport Loretsyan emphasized the importance of the role of the EU Delegation role in sustainable development in Armenia, and particularly in reforming sports tourism. “Development shall not be limited to Yerevan. Such projects will  become a locomotive of the development of the regions”,- he said.

Ambassador Switalski visited Boo Alternative House, then he was introduced to the area of the mountain bike park where the mountain bike center and stadium will be constructed soon.

The trail finished at Myasnikyan street, near the former Pioneer Palace building where the mountain bike center and other infrastructures will be built later this year.

The EU Ambassador awarded prize winners while all the participants were awarded with medals. The event ended with a concert by Clocker band and DJ Carlos Muradyan.
